1922 P silver dollar MS65 ?

I had my coin graded at MS65 today, how much is it worth?

I assume you had your coin graded by a dealer, not by a professional company. If you had it graded by either PCGS or NGC, your coin is worth more than if it's a dealers opinion.

1922 -P is common, but not so much in MS65. There's a big price difference between 64 and 65.

PCGS, the top grading company, values it in MS64 at $86 and MS65 at $225. In the real world, the values are lower, but not by a lot. NGC values are slightly lower, but not by a lot, and NGC will let you grade a single coin. PCGS requires membership, or submitting through a registered dealer.

MS64s are seen on eBay far more often, and are selling in a range from $65 - $85, total price including postage. Even with coins of the same grade, there are variables, with color and eye appeal being the biggest, that affect value. So each coin needs to be seen.

An MS65, being more scarce, and also more expensive (pricing some buyers out of the market), isn't showing up on eBay sold results as often. One sold for $210, another, with the + designation, meaning PCGS judged it to be better quality but not enough for MS66, sold for $215. But a couple of others priced in the $170-$180 range drew no bids. Color and eye appeal were probably the reason why; again, each coin needs to be judged on its own merits.

The problem you have, in today's marketplace, is that the market treats professionally graded coins more favorably than ungraded or 'raw' coins like yours, even if they ARE the same grade, as judged by a dealer. The problem is that, unless you can actually see the coin yourself, you don't know what you're getting when you buy a raw coin. On eBay, a really nice MS65 would probably sell for the MS64 price or less. This coin would be more than worth paying the $30-$40 or so grading fee. Now, the dealer that looked at it knows it's a MS65, but also knows that to get the MS65 price, the coin will have to be graded. So if the dealer was offering to buy it from you, knowing it would bring $210 minus the grading fee, or a net of $170 - $180, you would probably be offered a bit more than the MS64 price. Perhaps $100 at the most.

Some long-time collectors don't like professional grading because it has definitely changed the hobby. They say they know how to grade and don't need a third party, and I somewhat agree with that. But the grading companies started out as a means of authenticating coins, weeding out the tampered ones for those who aren't experts, like most of us. That grading turned into a chase for high-grade coins and the subsequent increase in prices across the board, for everyone, is something that long-time collectors should be happy about if they've held their collections. Many don't acknowledge it, though.

Morgan Dollars—the most popular silver dollar coins?

Morgan dollars that were minted from the years 1878 through 1904 (plus, later once again in 1921) just might be the most widely collected of all U.S. silver coins. Morgan dollars may even be more sought-after than the Peace dollar or Walking Liberty Half Dollar.

There are so many Morgan dollars available to collect, that Morgan appeals to a collector’s “hunt and gather” instinct. Morgan dollars are collected in a variety of ways. Most coin collectors who collect silver dollars like to collect Morgan dollars the traditional way: by obtaining one of each date and mintmark combination, which is not easy. Older collectors can remember that in the 1950s silver dollars were available at banks but too expensive to collect. A simpler approach that would be far less expensive would be to put together a collection that consists of the least expensive example of each of the different years of Morgan dollars. By doing this, you would have a complete year set without the focus on all the different mintmarks of Morgan Dollars.

What are the varieties of Morgan Dollars that are most popular? One coin collecting guide book lists five different varieties of the Philadelphia-minted 1878 and another five varieties of the 1880-CC, which is the Carson City mint that so many collectors love to own coins from.

In fact, a third way to collect Morgan dollars would be to focus on Morgan dollars from the Carson City Mint. This type of coin collection would be made up of only 13 different coins: the mint years 1878 -1885 and 1889-1893. The only downside of collecting Morgan Dollars this way is that four of the dates (1879-CC, 1889-CC, 1892-CC, 1893-CC) are expensive to own in all the grades.

Even the “common” dates of Carson City Morgan dollars are relatively expensive because of high demand. The good news is that this collection would feature the 1878-CC, with a mintage of 2,212,000 (the second highest mintage of the 13 dates, following only the 1890-CC (2,309,041).
